Biology-Inspired Drug Delivery

June 28, 2018

The mission for an ideal cancer treatment has led to the exploration of a variety of platforms to facilitate more desirable and efficient drug delivery. While chemotherapy (the treatment of cancer with chemical drugs) remains one of the most effective weapons against cancer, there is a need to steer the compounds to their required sites using site-specific drug delivery vehicles. This has inspired the investigation of various natural particulates and biomaterials for that purpose. Bio-inspired platforms that directly mimic natural components in the body have demonstrated their ability to serve as one of the most versatile and innovative drug delivery systems.

An Update on Digital Health

April 26, 2018

In November 2017, the FDA approved a therapeutic pill that is integrated with an ingestible sensor that can capture information about patient compliance. That product, Otsuka’s Abilify MyCite®, is indicated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. When the patient ingests this pill, data is sent to a patch worn on the patient’s torso. From there, the data is wirelessly transmitted to a mobile app that can be accessed by both the patient and their physician. The MyCite approval will raise awareness of this field of technology. As many as 150 firms around the world are developing digital therapeutics, according to the Economist. It is the hope that Ability MyCite, and future therapeutics like it, will be another step to increased patient compliance.

Nanotechnology Trends in Drug Delivery

Nanotechnology Trends in Drug Delivery

March 06, 2017

Nanotechnology has the potential to make a significant impact on healthcare and in the field of drug delivery. Nanotherapeutics can provide targeted drug delivery, improved solubility, extended half-life of drugs, and can improve immunogenicity which has resulted in the potential to revolutionize the treatment of many and deadly diseases that affect all ages of all populations. Nanotechnology can also provide new solutions for treating cancer.

Brand Extension through Alternative Medicines

Brand Extension through Alternative Medicines

January 31, 2017

In today’s generation, the consumer population has increased its interest in self-care. Traditionally, consumers have been using medicated treatments to combat various conditions including pain, cold/flu, and allergies. With the increased interest in health and wellness, many consumers are looking for alternatives, such as homeopathic medicines, to replace medicated OTC products.

Digital Health Challenges

Digital Health Challenges

November 01, 2016

TCI believes companies should be mindful of three main challenges regarding digital health before implementing these types of tools. These challenges include: patient and consumer challenges, provider implementation, and scaling up from pilot to commercial scale.

Probiotics as Drug Delivery Systems

September 30, 2016

The gut contains trillions of “good” bacteria that play a major role in our health. Researchers now think that our gut microflora may be linked to a number of conditions ranging from digestive disorders, allergies, heart disease to depression. Probiotics are live microorganisms introduced into the body for their beneficial qualities. Probiotics have been used for many years and are conventionally incorporated into consumer goods and dietary supplements. An interesting area where the use of probiotics is being experimented is in drug delivery. Researchers are now investigating the use of microbes as drug delivery systems.

Indie Beauty

August 30, 2016

Indie beauty is one of the latest trends to hit the cosmetic retail market. It is defined as independently owned businesses that produce and provide products that have heart and soul – the types of product that have a true, personal meaning behind them, whether it is based on quality, passion, wellness, and/or sustainability.

Insight into Next-Generation Immuno-Oncology Developments

June 09, 2016

With global sales forecasted to exceed $170 billion by 2021, oncology is by far the fastest growing therapeutic area. The current focus is on immuno-oncology (I-O) and especially the immune checkpoint inhibitors such as BMS’ Opdivo® and Merck’s Keytruda®. But what are the key strategies for long term success?
