The mission for an ideal cancer treatment has led to the exploration of a variety of platforms to facilitate more desirable and efficient drug delivery. While chemotherapy (the treatment of cancer with chemical drugs) remains one of the most effective weapons against cancer, there is a need to steer the compounds to their required sites using site-specific drug delivery vehicles. This has inspired the investigation of various natural particulates and biomaterials for that purpose. Bio-inspired platforms that directly mimic natural components in the body have demonstrated their ability to serve as one of the most versatile and innovative drug delivery systems.

In November 2017, the FDA approved a therapeutic pill that is integrated with an ingestible sensor that can capture information about patient compliance. That product, Otsuka’s Abilify MyCite®, is indicated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. When the patient ingests this pill, data is sent to a patch worn on the patient’s torso. From there, the data is wirelessly transmitted to a mobile app that can be accessed by both the patient and their physician. The MyCite approval will raise awareness of this field of technology. As many as 150 firms around the world are developing digital therapeutics, according to the Economist. It is the hope that Ability MyCite, and future therapeutics like it, will be another step to increased patient compliance.

Probiotics are live microorganisms introduced into the body for their beneficial qualities. Probiotics have been used for many years and are conventionally incorporated into consumer goods and dietary supplements. An interesting area where the use of probiotics is being experimented is in drug delivery. Researchers are now investigating the use of microbes as drug delivery systems.
